The BIG drive of 2016

Over Labor Day weekend, Roy unexpectedly had 10 days off so we got this crazy idea to drive to North Dakota - why not? We like road trips and we need it for our 50th state-visited Bucket List.
We left on Friday, 26 August, driving  my F150, spent the first night in Indiana somewhere, and then stopped 2 nights in Franklin/Greendale, Wisconsin, staying with Don and Georgia Warren and attended Church on Sunday to see many wonderful and dear friends there.
On to South Dakota where we stayed in Deadwood. Roy actually had a job interview in nearby Lead with Fermilab, which was the main reason for our trip.  They'd have flown him there, but we wanted to spend time together - they did pay for the Lead motel!

One evening we attended a local presentation of how "Wild Bill Hickok" was gunned down in the #10 saloon and then the trial of his killer.  The small theater group did a great job; a little music, comedy and audience participation - for some reason not many tourists were in town.

Wild Bill was murdered in cold blood while playing cards
the capture of Jack McCall

Jury to the left, bailiff and Annie Oakley singing (she is rumored to have had a crush on Bill),  Judge behind Annie, Jack, a small sheriff 'volunteer' from the audience and the lawyers on the right.  It was very fun.

From Deadwood we drove north to duh, North Dakota, the 50th state for each of us.

YEAH!!! finally.
then turned West a few miles to Theodore Roosevelt National Park.  I've wanted to visit here since reading David McCullough's book - Mornings on Horseback.  The park is actually in 3 pieces  - we visited the South unit.

the desk is original - TR used it.

We saw a few buffalo down by the river and I had read at the Visitors Center there was a small band of wild horses in the Park, but I thought our chances of seeing them were slim to none.  But low and behold who was hanging out at the water hole in a gully near the road? I was so excited!!! Dream realized!!

From there we sprinted East across ND, spent the night in Fargo and I had an extra hour in the AM while Roy did some computer work so, of course, I found a nearby quilt shop.  I thought this was funny: a husband's dream - construction in front of the shop.

From there:  South to Kansas City.
First stop: Harry Truman Presidential Library.

a lady insisted on taking our picture here

The Truman home on 219 North Delaware Street in Independence MO; where Harry lived from the time of  his marriage to Bess Wallace on May 28,1919 to his death on December 26,1972

That afternoon we visited the Church Visitor's Center in Independence and right across the street is the Church of Christ or Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple.

That evening we went to a Kansas City Royals baseball game - very fun!  (they lost in the 9th)

dinner in a helmet: BBQ nachos
You never know what you're going to see at a baseball game......

Alex tells me this guy is famous....

What the heck?
Well, apparently there is a story about the mantis mask: on August 20th, a Praying Mantis showed up in the KC Royals dugout and they won that night. So he has become the unofficial mascot, and the team continues to win..... go figure. (as I write this on October 4th though, the Royals did not make the playoffs.  Rally Mantis Jr. lost his touch?)
The next morning we attended a session in the beautiful Kansas City Temple, but it is really in Independence.  It was a humbling experience for me to be in a Temple in Missouri after all the heartache and horrible times for the Saints back in the late 1830's.

From there we drove across Missouri to St. Louis to meet up with our wonderful friends Jennifer and AJ Curtis whom we met in Brisbane, Australia.  It was extra special to attend their Ward Temple night in the St. Louis Temple.  (Two temples in one day - I like KC better. Shhhh).  We spent the night with the Curtis' and their kids love playing games and they're very smart - a fun time.

Now it was time to drive hard to get home to Rover in Alabama.  Spent the night in Tennessee with Marilyn and John and arrived home on September 6th so Roy could return to work the next day.  ~4400 miles.  Whew!  a great trip but always glad to be home.
