EKKA!

We enjoyed a fun afternoon at the Queensland Exhibition last week, which the locals affectionately have shortened to Ekka. (the Aussies love to shorten words! e.g., breakfast is "brekky" and University is "Uni") It is their State Fair and held now in the winter as to avoid the hot and sticky summer weather. The State of Queensland is huge, covering 22% of Australia but the Fair had a wonderful rural feeling and is very family oriented. I loved the quilt exhibit; some amazing quilt artists down here! The strawberry ice cream sundaes (a fair favorite!) and "pluto pups" (corndogs) were yummy! In the late afternoon, we sat ourselves down in the Arena and enjoyed several riding and jumping classes, a polo demonstation, a log chopping competition (which reminded Roy and I of the Paul Bunyan Days Logging Show), a monster truck smashing cars and freestyle motorcross before the fireworks. In typical Aussie fashion, it ended early, at 9 pm.
